Who Am I

My name is Nile Ariel McElhaney, and I am a senior at Alameda Community Learning Center. I am dually enrolled at Laney College, pursuing an Associate of Science in Biology, and I expect to graduate in June 2024. My next steps are to pursue dual degrees in Nursing and Business. I've been an avid volunteer at Kaiser Permanente Health fairs in Oakland and Richmond, CA, since 2017. I've been a National Coalition of 100 Black Women Positive Steps Program member since 2018. I am the 2022 Madam CJ Walker Business and Community Awards, Positive Step Program 1st Place essay winner, and the 2023 Positive Steps Program Second Place essay winner. Currently I serve as the Senior Liaison for my senior class helping to coordinate fundraising, senior projects, organize school dances and act as an assistant editor of my school yearbook. I’m also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. This summer I completed my internship at the West Oakland Health Center.
An adjective I would use to describe myself is tenacious, meaning “persistent”.  Growing up, I struggled to hear sounds and words in sentences, making reading a seemingly unbearable task. Despite having tutoring support, there were countless moments of feeling discouraged and unsure of my abilities. Nevertheless, I pushed forward, have overcome and my unshakeable spirit has pushed me to be a 4.2 GPA student.
I love to read and always start my mornings and end my nights by reading a chapter or more of a book or an online story. I'm a massive fan of books written by black female authors. Some of my favorites are Angie Thomas, Nic Stone, and Nicola Yoon. My favorite quote is, “What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?” by Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give. During my free time other than reading I enjoy baking, creative writing and other fun crafts, and obsessing over halloween my favorite holiday.
